North Terrace Redevelopment

North Terrace Stage 1 represents the first stage of Adelaide’s largest urban and landscape development along the culturally important and historical institutional section of North Terrace. The major redevelopment provides a significant South Australian Urban/Parkland environment at the edge of the Adelaide Central Business District as a link to the adjoining River Torrens parkland. The construction site 380m long extended from Kintore Ave, to Pulteney Street for the full width of the North Terrace to the cultural building boundary to the North and the boundary of the CBD buildings to the South.

The project including replacement of existing underground services was exclusively redeveloped by CATCON to a high standard of quality. Skilled traffic and pedestrian management control and public liaison was exercised at all times to meet the Client’s requirement for “business as usual” with minimum disruption to substantial pedestrian and vehicular traffic and for the continuation of annual events at the precinct.

Urban works involved the construction of 3 fountains, concrete paved plazas to each institutional building, granite paved inner and outer footpaths, trees and soft landscaping, street furniture, signs, street and pedestrian lighting and upgraded roadworks to North Terrace. Redevelopment of the New State Library Forecourt, South Australian Museum Forecourt and the University of Adelaide Forecourt, were also undertaken by the firm in conjunction with the work occurring on the terrace.

Awards: 2006 South Australian Case Earth Award – Construction Excellence Category 2 for North Terrace Redevelopment Stage 1.
