The Colongra Gas Turbine project is located at Lake Munmorah Power Station near Doyalson – approximately 100km North of Sydney. The facility consists of 4 x GT13E2 gas turbines, generating 660MW of electricity, enough to power 400,000+ homes.
During the 12 month construction project CATCON were contracted by head contractor Alstom Ltd under the direction of Delta Electricity to supply and deliver all earth works and civil works for the project.
To make the 43,000m2 site suitable for construction, the area had to be excavated and levelled in order to meet specifications. With a large portion of the site deemed as unsuitable, material was removed and replaced with engineered fill.
The civil works portion involved over 8,000m3 of concrete elements including; the 4 turbine foundations, 4 transformer enclosures, stack foundations, auxiliary blocks and fuel and water storage tank foundations. CATCON also provided and constructed all services for the project inclusive of; electrical ducts, 5km earth grid system, water and fire mains, storm water drainage system, oily water drainage and road works. Building works consisted of a facilities building using steel frame and pre-fabricated construction techniques as well as all fit-out works for a turnkey solution.
Heavy earthworks and construction required an array of CATCON’s equipment including; a D12 dozer, 20t and 30t excavators, grader, 25t articulated dump trucks, 12t compaction roller, cranes (20t, 50t and 90t), 29m concrete pump, water cart and JCB Tele-handlers.
The project required tight programming constraints due to unusually inclement weather. The complexity of the services also required logical construction sequencing.
