One of the hallmarks of Gouger Street in Adelaide is the Chinese Gateway at the entrance to the Chinese markets. Commissioned by the Adelaide City Council, the gateway was pre-fabricated in China and CATCON were contracted to co-ordinate the installation of the elaborate structure.
CATCON’s involvement included the construction of the footings, relocation of existing services, erection of scaffolding and assembly of the gateway, cladding and painting. Earth moving equipment was used to prepare the foundations and services and a crane was required to lift sections onto the gateway structure. Due to the specialist nature of the structure CATCON co-ordinated and hosted skilled Chinese citizens who in turn carried out particular aspects of the gateway construction and assembly.
The inner-city location of the project meant that CATCON were required to manage busy vehicular and pedestrian traffic flows. CATCON were also required to liaise with the local Chinese community and shop traders and also ensure the project was completed on time and on budget.
