Adelaide Oval

CATCON was involved in the successful and widely critically acclaimed redevelopment of Adelaide Oval (SA). CATCON was contracted to carry out: the bulk excavation of the Southern and Eastern Stands, complete all bulk excavation of stands (200,000m3 total), identification and management of contamination. Northern Bowl; Reshape and detail the Northern end of the spectator seated/standing area under existing trees and scoreboard, the demolition and removal of existing light tower and grandstand footings. Bulk excavation works of the Oval to revised subgrade. Strip the existing playing surface, excavate and remove 38,000m3 of material to create a “retainment cell” for site won contamination. Compact and fill to 450mm below new playing surface. Basement detail; shade and detail excavation of South and Eastern Stand basements. Fill and prepare all external plazas; place contaminated fill in behind stand structures, prepare Southern, eastern plazas and the Northern Administration areas. Memorial Drive retention works; form, reinforce and pour the south western retention system between Adelaide oval and Memorial Drive, excavate and prepare Southern entry ramp and associated slip lane to Memorial Drive, excavate and prepare Victor Richardson ramp and interface to King William Street, prepare and maintain two external material sites at Gillman where a total of 134,000m3 of material was disposed.

Significant work was done in identifying and testing of existing ground materials to determine contamination. This required CATCON’s Environmental team working on site full time to ensure carefully stripped surfaces remained clear of contamination. This was broken into 3 layers horizontally across the site creating a moonscape effect whilst contamination tests were performed to confirm material classification. Depending on results, Clean material could be disposed to Gillman site 1 (112,000m3), Intermediate waste (23,000m3) to Gillman and Low Level contamination (65,000m3) remaining on site and quarantined, tracked and disposal locations on site documented.
