Located approximately 650km North West of Adelaide is Oxiana’s Prominent Hill copper/gold mine site. CATCON was contracted supply steel construction and concrete elements for the new mine including; approximately 15,000m3 of reinforced concrete, 2000t of reinforcing steel, design and construction of ventilation tunnel, construction of reinforced earth wall and earthworks associated with all structures.

The twelve month project was situated in a challenging environment. Remoteness, dust and heat were all aspects of the project which provided a challenge to the 95 on site employees at the projects peak. Due to the remoteness, concrete for the project was batched on-site using mobile plants.

Main structures completed by CATCON included; the 30m high primary crusher, reclaim vault, conveyor footings, coarse ore storage facility, concentrate thickener, tailings thickener, reclaim vent tunnel, filter building and sag and ball mill footings (16m high).

The large amount of heavy earthworks and lifting required an array of CATCON’s equipment including; a D9 dozer, 30t excavators, 25t articulated dump trucks, 12t roller, cranes (20t, 50t and 90t), a 28m concrete boom pump, an articulated water cart and a 1200L tandem water cart.
