The $25 million dollar Tallawarra 400MW Power Plant is a significant project in the civil engineering and construction portfolio of CATCON. TRU Energy, looking to expand power generation facilities near Wollongong on the central coast of New South Wales, called upon CATCON under the direction of head contractor Alstom Energy to co-ordinate all civil works for the project.

CATCON were involved in all civil engineering, construction and infrastructure development for the project. Specifically; 11,500 m3 of structural elements where intricate scaffolding and casting elements were used to construct; the main turbine foundation, HRSS slab, turbine tank, cooling water channels and intake structure, transformer area and blast walls. CATCON also provided and constructed all services  for the project such as; electrical ducts, earth grid system, water and fire mains, storm water drainage system and all road works.  Building works consisted of the workshop and control structures using steel frame and pre-fab construction techniques.

The 11 month project required tight programme management due to time and access constraints. To effectively manage access to the site, CATCON implemented a night shift, where at times crews worked 24 hours a day to complete the project within the original time and budgetary limitations.
